Africa-Press – Malawi. Budding football side Ndirande Stars on Friday took time to donate items to patients at the maternity ward at Ndirande Community Health Centre in Blantyre. The items included baby basins, soap, sugar and salt.
Stars Team Manager Kuruwa Ngwira, whose team has earned promotion from Southern Region Football Association Division One to Premier Division, said they used part of the prize money which the team received after reaching two cup finals.
The side lost to Nyasa Big Bullets Reserve in the Nyasa Capital Finance Southern Region Cup and also went down to Zingwangwa United in the Unayo Division One Cup.
Ngwira said despite facing financial challenges, they felt it necessary to reach out to the community they operate in. “We wanted to share the little we have with our mothers and sisters while contributing to government’s vision of promoting hygiene and safe motherhood,” he said.
Stars Captain Kingsley Ben said it was a privilege for the team to gather and share something with the members of the community. “We have to make an impact in our community,” he said. Ndirande Health Centre Clinical Officer Gladson Zembesani said the donation will assist mothers in taking care of their new born babies.
“We are thankful for the donation. Some of our patients lack essential things. We appreciate the gesture shown by Ndirande Stars and we hope that others will come in to assist,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Thandie Jailosi from Chinseu, thanked Stars for making the donation. “The donation is timely as some of our problems have been solved,” she said.
