Africa-Press – Malawi. New Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, Yoichi Oya, has pledged his country’s continued support towards the development of Malawi. Oya was speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe when he presented his letters of credence to President Lazarus Chakwera.
He reiterated that the two countries have been on good terms for a long time, such that it is important that the relationship continues through support to various sectors.
“Fortunately, we do not have any complex matters with your country. In this context, Japan will support Malawi in various fields. We are expecting that Malawi will support us in various fields as well,” he said.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo commended Japan for the support it has been rendering to Malawi which, among other things, necessitated the construction of Blantyre- Limbe dual carriageway, Nalikule Teachers Training College and the extension of Tedzani power plant.
“We value so much the support that we receive from Japan because most of it is by way of grants, not loans. So if they give us money, you can be assured that it is a grant; we do not have to pay back,” Tembo said.
She said Malawi and Japan are also discussing the need to revamp the One Village One Product project. The relationship between Malawi and Japan dates back to 1964.
Oya has replaced Satoshi Iwakiri, who left Malawi in December last year. Mathews Kasanda is a journalist who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from University of Malawi (The Polytechnic).
In 2015, Media Institute of Southern Africa awarded him the Best Print Media Education Journalist of the Year accolade.
