Africa-Press – Malawi. Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is set to implement Confederation of African Football (Caf)’s Club Licencing System this year. This follows Fam Executive Committee’s approval of commencement of the system during a quarterly meeting held in Mangochi recently.
The development also follows the release of Fifa’s new Club Licencing guidelines for women’s football which Caf adopted as part of its programmes. The guidelines will be in force for the women’s 2023 Caf Champions League.
The system is aimed at professionalising the game. Fam Compliance Manager Casper Jangale said they will implement the system in three ways to suit Malawi’s football environment.
“The objectives will be to grow participation, enhance commercial value and build foundations. The second step will involve setting up of systems including consulting the National Women’s Football Association [NWFA], clubs and various stakeholders. We will use established systems in men’s football.
“We will work with Club Licencing personnel and decision-making bodies of FIB [First Instant Body] and appeals.
“Regulations will have to be developed along the way. The initial stage will involve a two-year period,” Jangale said.
NWFA Chairperson Suzgo Ngwira, who is also a Fam executive committee member, said she was aware of the plans to introduce the system. “We will discuss it as NWFA and I will be able to comment on the matter,” Ngwira said. Women’s football is one of the country’s fastest growing sports, with a national league having already been set up.
However, implementing the system in women’s football could be a tall order for Fam considering that most clubs in men’s football have struggled to fulfil all the requirements, especially those being bankrolled by individuals.
In the country’s women’s football, Nyasa Big Bullets Women, Civil Service United, Ascent Academy, Kamuzu Barracks and Blue Eagles Women are the only teams with stable sponsorship.
Malawi Women’s National Football Team Captain Tabitha Chawinga and ward councillor Isaac ‘Jomo’ Osman bankroll DD Sunshine and Ntopwa, respectively. Sunshine Chairperson Anthony Msendema said he was waiting for communication from Fam on the matter.
