Africa-Press – Malawi. With less than a week before Super League of Malawi (Sulom) goes to polls at its elective Annual General Assembly, Malawi News Sport reveals the detailed results of the nomination process.
According to the nomination papers we have seen, aspirant Fleethood Haiya got 10 nominations against incumbent Tiya Somba Banda’s four. Only Moyale Barracks and Silver Strikers did not nominate a presidential candidate.
The league governing body will elect new office bearers on Saturday, February 25, in Mangochi District. On Tuesday this week, Sulom through auditing firm, Crowe Horwath Malawi, released a list of nominated candidates ahead of the polls. However, Sulom and Howarth Malawi concealed the detailed results.
Nevertheless, some analysts have warned candidates against complacency, saying securing more nominations was not a guarantee of winning the elections.
On Tuesday, both Haiya and Somba Banda admitted that nominations were not a true reflection of their popularity among the voters. Haiya said he was confident of winning the top seat.
“From the grapevine, I got a lot of nominations but these are not votes. I need to convince the voters,” he said. On his part, Somba Banda said the battle has started. “The clubs should not be intimidated in one way or the other,” he said.
According to other nominations, incumbent Sulom Vice President Gilbert Mitawa got 13 approvals against David Kanyenda’s two. Mighty Tigers were the only team that did not nominate a candidate on the position of vice president.
On the position of General Secretary, former Silver Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali got eight nominations against incumbent William Banda’s seven nominations.
Bullets did not nominate anyone on the post of General Secretary. Incumbent Sulom vice General Secretary Flao Mwale got more nominations (nine) than his challengers Donnex Chilonga (four) and Kanyenda (one).
Incoming Sulom Treasurer Allie Mwachande earned a total of 14 nominations against Malinda Chinyama’s one. However, Chinyama withdrew from the race just a day before the nominations were released.
Solomon Gomezgani Mchawi will go unopposed as Sulom Legal Adviser but he only got nine nominations out of the 16 clubs. On the position of committee members, nine candidates earned nominations.
Daudi Mtanthiko and Charles Mwanyungwa each got two nominations whereas Ronald Chiwaula and Henry Banda got three nominations each. Chimwemwe Nyirenda, Godfrey Makawano, William Nhlane, Akuzike Kafwamba and Mavuto Missi each got one nomination.
Sports analyst Peterkins Kayira urged the contestants not to be carried away by the number of nominations. “Looking at the trend of elections in Malawi, it is not a guarantee that the one who gets more nominations will win. We have seen people getting very few nominations but winning elections, so every candidate must exercise caution,” Kayira said.
The nominated people were expected to confirm their candidature by paying nominations fees by Friday. Clubs have until today to submit their representatives to the elective assembly. The new office bearers will run the affairs of the league governing body for four years.
