Africa-Press – Malawi. Police in the Northern Region have disclosed that they have registered 140 drink and drive cases since January this year. The police said the problem contributed to 1,300 accidents that happened last year, 33 of which are connected to motorcycle taxi operators. Northern Region Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola says officers have been using breathalysers to trace drivers who drive while drunk.
“Looking at the main causes of accidents, speeding and driving while drunk top the list. We are very serious when it comes to preventing cases of accidents in this Easter period. That is the reason our officers are on the roads with some equipment like breathalysers,” Chapola said.
Malawi Police Service records indicate that, between January and April this year, 36 people have died in motorcycle taxi accidents. Last year, 248 people died in 1,293 accidents that occurred in the country.
