Africa-Press – Malawi. The government of Norway in conjunction with the World Food Programme (WFP) has donated USD8.3 million towards food response to support the emergency lean season campaign period.
Speaking after presenting the donation to the Department of Disaster Risk Management (DoDMA), Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi Her Excellence Anne Sofie Bjelland said, their government recognizes food insecurities that Malawi has and that as a country Malawi can not remain in isolation.
“Given the current economic challenges and high inflation, without urgent support, many vulnerable Malawians would go hungry. We hope that through this partnership, WFP will be enabled to procure maize and continue school feeding programmes that help families keep their children in school, even in difficult times. Norway stands firmly with Malawi during these challenging times,” said Bjelland
According to the Ambassador, through this contribution, Norway will support WFP and the Government of Malawi in distributing nearly 6,000 metric tons of regionally procured maize to 520,000 people in the districts of Mulanje, Phalombe, and Chikwawa as the Government of Norway, together with other countries has also provided an additional USD 657,000 in flexible support to WFP’s Immediate Response.
This contribution will enable WFP to reach more people with lifesaving emergency assistance.
In his remarks Commissioner for DoDMA Wilson Moleni described this as a meaningful partnership between the two governments as it represents a lifeline of hope and resilience for millions of Malawians.
“During the lean season, the Government remains committed to ensuring that no food insecure household is left behind. We will continue to mobilise resources through the Ministry of Finance, engage
development partners, and strengthen coordination mechanisms with all relevant ministries and agencies. Today’s contribution is a timely
reinforcement of these efforts,” Moleni said.
Due to the severity of the food insecurity, His Excellency, the State President of the Republic of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika declared state of disaster in all districts and cities across Malawi and appealed for local and international for support.
The Malawi Vulnerability and Assessment Committee report found out that over 4 million Malawians are food insecure across the country. The 2025/2026 lean season is therefore projected to be one of significant strain, with many families requiring timely assistance to meet their basic food needs.
