Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has asked Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to provide detailed reports on how it used its allocation in the last financial year.

This comes a few weeks after Fam claimed, through the March 31 edition of The Nation that it only received K240 million out of the proposed K1.4 billion in the 2020/2021 budget.

However, in a statement released Thursday, Sports Council Public Relations and Communication Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said the association was portraying a bad picture, sounding as if it did not receive any funding from the government.

“We hope that we will start the new financial year with sincerity. Moving forward, we will call upon all associations to demonstrate how they are complementing government efforts in developing sports in the country.

“Expecting the government to always fully fund associations as well as national teams is unstainable in the long run. At the moment, we are waiting for Fam to reconcile the money allocated in the last financial year,” Ntulumbwa said.

He said the government through Sports Council fully supported Fam financially during World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers and the latter’s finals in Cameroon to the tune of almost K1 billion.

“In its roadmap, Fam assured us that if it is given the funding as requested, it will manage to take part in the World Cup and Afcon qualifiers and the finals in Cameroon. Fam was given the funds,’’ Ntulumbwa said.

Fam and Netball Association of Malawi always get the lion’s share of grants from the government to sports bodies across the country. Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda did not pick our calls to comment on the matter. Before the Afcon finals, Fam had indicated that it had a K154 million deficit in the Flames’ K525 million budget for the continental showpiece.
