Africa-Press – Malawi. Mighty Mukuru Wanderers football club says their players neither refused to continue with play nor caused the abandonment of the match against Silver Strikers in Airtel 8 Cup.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Competitions Committee charged Mighty Mukuru Wanderers with three charges of misconduct and the team was ordered to respond to the charges within 48 hours of receipt of notification.

Responding to the charges through the Board Secretary Chancy Gondwe, Wanderers denied accusations that their players caused the abandonment of the match at Bingu National Stadium last month.

“In any event, during the hearing Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Football Club shall show that its players neither refused to continue with play nor caused the abandonment of the match,” reads part of the response.

The Lali Lubani side further denied accusations that its supporters perpetrated violence saying none of the supporters got arrested in relation to the incident.

“No single supporter of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Football Club was apprehended by the security personnel hired by the Competitions Committee or at all.

“Further, the host club Silver Strikers and/or the Competitions Committee were responsible for order and security both in and around the Stadium before, during and after the match in terms of Article 17(1) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code,” responded Wanderers.

The club further says the Charge Sheet is defective and embarrassing for failure to disclose the charging provision upon which the alleged offence is premised.

The defending champions of the cup further deny bringing the name of the sponsor, FAM and the game into disrepute and puts the Competitions Committee to strict proof thereof.

The game ended prematurely in the additional minutes when referee Godfrey Nkhakananga allowed Silver’s second goal which was scored after he had initially blown the whistle and stopped play for an infringement.
