Africa-Press – Malawi. The Public Appointments Committee of Parliament (Pac) yesterday confirmed Reckford Kampanje as Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) Board Chairperson.
Pac Chairperson Joyce Chitsulo told The Daily Times that the committee confirmed Kampanje after receiving a copy of his letter of resignation from the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma). The committee had on Sunday pended Kampanje’s confirmation on the basis that he also held a director position on the Nocma Board.
During yesterday’s meeting, Pac members also confirmed two other directors for Mera who the government had appointed to replace Innocencia Chirombo and Rodrick Chingota, who were rejected on Sunday.
One of the two directors is Phyllis Manguluti. Following the confirmation of the three directors, Mera has a full board after Pac confirmed Charles Kambauwa and Ulemu Kambwiri on Sunday.
The Mera board’s first task would be to review fuel selling prices which have remained constant for a long time despite international oil prices surging in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine tension.
In recent weeks, Consumers Association of Malawi has been pushing the authorities to hike fuel prices in line with changes on the international market, saying holding the prices artificially for so long would hurt consumers the day authorities decide to hike them at once.
In a recent fuel update, Mera indicated that the fuel Price Stabilisation Fund, which it uses to cushion fuel prices, had been significantly depleted. Mera is a corporate body established under the Energy Regulatory Act, Number 20 of 2004, as the energy sector-wide regulator.
Its mandate is to regulate the energy sector in Malawi in a fair, transparent, efficient and cost-effective manner for the benefit of consumers and operators
