Africa-Press – Malawi. The Pakistani community has described the country’s hosting of the African Union Region 5 Youth Games as a milestone in the development of sports. Pakistani Welfare Association in Malawi Chairperson Aamir Patel made the remarks in Lilongwe during the handover of items worth K500,000 for use during the Games.
The items are 500 cases of drinking water, exercise books, rulers and ballpoint pens. Aamir said the Games will create many opportunities for the country in various sectors.
“We saw it fit to join in efforts to make Games a success through our donation. We know that the athletes will need a lot during the Games. We therefore decided to offer them our support of 500 cases of 500 millilitre bottles of water and other items,” he said.
Aamir then appealed to the business community and other well-wishers to come forward and help in supporting Malawi’s hosting of the Games. Region 5 Chief Operations Officer Lisungu Banda thanked the Pakistani community for the donation, describing it as timely.
“This will help in bridging the gap that is there in the area of materials needed for the Games. We are therefore calling on other companies, organisations and individuals to emulate the example that the Pakistanis have set. This will greatly contribute towards ensuring that the Games are a great success.
“We are in need of 500,000 litres of water to be used by athletes, coaches and administrators during the Games. The water will be in use during the Games. We will have over 2,000 athletes and 450 coaches and administrators,” Banda said.
She said Ubuntu Water Beverages and Lucky One Hotel had also offered their support in various forms. “There are several other firms that have responded positively to our request for support. Such gestures are helping in igniting the African dream of working together in the promotion of sports across the region,” Banda said.
Ubuntu Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hussein Patel said the Games would provide young athletes with an international platform to showcase their talent.
“This opportunity will help in changing young people’s lives and their pursuit of different careers. I do not need to be an athlete to help. I have done this to help fellow youths to excel in their respective sporting careers,” the 19-year-old Hussein said.
Lucky One Hotel CEO Qasim Patel said youths in the region will greatly benefit from the Games. “We are keen to see our athletes being successful. This is one way of promoting Malawi. It is possible to raise the country’s profile through the Games,” Qasim said. The Games are expected to start on December 2 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
