Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Parliament’s Public accounts Committee (PAC) has given 14 days to the Ministry of Natural resources to refund MK34 million which was squandered by two forest officers.
The duo are Talick Movete and Alick Mitawa who were the accounts personnel at that time. Chairperson for the Committee, Shadrek Namalomba said there is clear indication that the officers stole public money by correcting revenues without receipts.
He said within the 14 days the ministry should handcuff those in question. Namalomba observes that the ministry had taken time to act on the matter as the case was discovered in 2019.
He accused the ministry of shielding the officers leading to plunder of resources . Namalomba said the Committee will pen Malawi to police to investigate the matter.
In her remarks Principal Secretary for the Ministry, Emily Mtumpanyama said they will write to the commissioner to act on the matter. Mtupanyama said the ministry agreed with the Committee that the two officers squandered funds from Linyangwa dam.
“There was an agreement between northern region water board and the ministry on the trees that were planted in the Linyangwa dam and the trees were sold in the essence that the money should be shared but the guys in question misused the funds,” said Mtupanyama.
