Africa-Press – Malawi. Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet (SPC) Colleen Zamba is being sought after by parliamentary committees, which want her to shed light on issues to do with government activities. One of the committees is the Public Accounts Committee (Pac), whose chairperson Mark Botomani confirmed expressing interest to engage Zamba.
“Actually, we engaged the Speaker of Parliament on Monday, when we sought her direction on how the SPC Zamba can be made to appear before committee members. We want her to respond to issues pertaining to audit queries.
“I may not want to pre-empt the issues that we plan to discuss with her but, as you know, there are so many audit queries from various MDAs [ministries, departments and agencies] that emanate from audits conducted by the National Audit Office. So, there are issues that the MDAs failed to respond to because they are streamlined within the mainstream civil service and we feel that the SPC, being the head of the service, is the right person to respond to the issues,” Botomani said.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee on Health has also engaged the office of the Speaker, seeking her intervention so that Zamba can appear before committee members.
Committee chairperson Mathews Ngwale told journalists in Lilongwe that the committee wants to meet Zamba to discuss how her office is handling a report to do with transformation of the country’s central hospitals into centres of excellence.
“We invited Madam Zamba three times but she has not shown interest in coming. All we wanted is for her to release that document for the process of elevating our central hospitals to proceed,” Ngwale said. On Monday, the Public Appointments Committee of Parliament also penned Gotani Hara, asking her to subpoena Zamba.
