Police housing project delays irk parliamentary committee

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Parliamentary Committee on Public Infrastructure has expressed displeasure with progress of the police housing project at Area 30 in Lilongwe. On Tuesday, committee members toured the project site, where members expressed displeasure with progress of works.

“What we noted in the first place was finger pointing between the contractor and the Ministry [of Lands]. The contractor is blaming delayed payment, with the ministry mentioning issues of certificates,” committee chairperson Enock Phale said. He further said the project site looks deserted.

“The Area 30 houses are under phase one of the project, as the works began together with other houses in Mangochi and Karonga and some were handed over to clients. Three years down the line, can you imagine that no single house has been occupied in Lilongwe,” Phale said.

Principal Secretary for Lands Davie Chilonga said they would make sure that project works progress well. “It is clear, from our findings, that there are delays to complete construction works,” Chilonga said. The project started in 2021. Out of 50 houses being constructed, 12 are for senior officers while 39 will be allocated to junior members of staff.
