Africa-Press – Malawi. Pride Initiative has equipped some youths with vocational skills as one way of reducing unemployment rate among them. Courtesy of its Youth Arise project which focuses on offering psycho-social trainings for mindset change, Pride Initiative, in conjunction with Global Youth Mobilisation Fund, has trained 202 youth in Blantyre city.
The one-week trainings aimed at propelling sustainable business-oriented vocational skills to enable the youth to be self-reliant amid the effects of Covid pandemic, according to Pride Initiative Managing Director Gloria Phiri.
“Coronavirus contributed to the high unemployment rate in the country where most companies downscaled their operations and left the youth vulnerable. These trainings were implemented to highlight the importance of business as an economic empowerment agent,” she said.
According to Phiri, the initiative is contributing positively to the government’s job creation drive mainly towards the youth. “Since we launched this project mid-March, we received overwhelming response more youths came to participate. We are planning to take the initiative to other districts to reach to more youths,” Phiri said.
Bangwe-based Trizer Miri, who acquired skills in baking and sausage making, emphasised the need for investments in vocational training. “Trainings have made a huge impact on us as we strive to be successful; therefore, the country needs more of such trainings to help empower more youths,” said Miri.
During the training, founder of Sanwecka Tech-companions Rasheed Kasito challenged the youth on application of ICT for economic transformation. On the other hand, Amos Zulumbi of Zachangu Agency motivated the youth on entrepreneurship.
