Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Prison Service has interdicted warder Emmanuel Chiganda of Zomba Central Prison for allegedly aiding a prisoner to traffic cellphones into a prison cell.
The prisoner, who was found with the phones in his intestines, claimed that he got the phones from Chiganda, who told him to insert them through the anus to get them into prison.
A memo from Chief Commissioner of Prisons Wandika Phiri, to all prison stations and establishments, indicates that Chiganda has been interdicted with immediate effect.
The memo also announced interdictions of two other warders Josophat Mphamgwe and Rashid Kamwendo of Lilongwe Prison for allegedly trafficking Indian hemp into the prison.
“The interdicted officers are informed that all powers, functions and privileges vested in them as prison officers shall be in abeyance during the whole period of interdiction until further communication from this office. These officers shall continue to be subject to the same responsibilities, discipline, penalties and authorities as if they had not been interdicted throughout the said period,” the memo reads.
The Zomba incident drew interest from, among others, social media users. Zomba Central Hospital Director Saulos Nyirenda and Malawi Prison Service national spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba confirmed the developments in separate interviews.
