Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Sabina Thom scored a brace for Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) giants TP Mazembe in 6-0 victory over Bikira M.H at Cofkm Stadium on Wednesday.
This was her first league match for TP Mazembe having joined them from Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Lionesses on a two-year contract with option for another year.
However, Thom made her debut for Congolese giants in 2023 Caf Champions League qualifiers held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. In an interview from Lubumbashi Thursday, Thom said the best is yet to come from her.
“It is my desire to score as many goals as possible for Mazembe to retain the championship. I will work hard to keep my place in the starting line-up,” Thom said. The Scorchers striker also provided one of the assists for the goals during the match.
She is one of the reliable players for the Scorchers. Thom scored the winner for the Scorchers in a 2-1 victory over Zambia as Malawi clinched the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa.
Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili was also excited with Thom’s exploits in DRC. “I am happy that all the players are performing according to our expectations. This is good for Malawi women’s football,” he said.
The former DD Sunshine (now Silver Strikers Ladies) striker also had a stint with Swedish women’s side Kvarnsvederns IK between 2017 and 2018 alongside Temwa Chawinga.
After the expiry of a one-year contract in Sweden, Thom returned home and re-joined Sunshine. However, in December 2021, she signed a three-year contract with Simba Super Queens of Tanzania.
Thom only played for Simba for one year before returning home to join military training. Thom is versatile as she can play as a winger or striker. Her work rate is also good. Her attributes include dribbling and scoring goals.
