Africa-PressMalawi. Seasoned boxer Salimu Chazama produced a superb performance to knockout challenger Grey Chimkwapulo in the second round at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe on Sunday.

The non-title contest was scheduled to last for eight rounds but Chazama did not take any chance, pinning the challenger from the first round before delivering a solid right hook to win the contest.

“I have been working hard to win. I will not get complacent again as it affected my form,” said the Malawi Defence Force boxer.

In the main supporting bout, boxing referee Abraham Nyirongo suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Alick Gogogodo in a heavyweight non-title contest.

Nyirongo, 43, was fighting for the first time and things appeared bad when he was sent to the canvas in the second round. However, Nyirongo beat the count and lasted the six rounds. Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board President Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba said Nyirongo’s performance was not bad.

“He rarely used his jab as he wanted to use the upper cut quite often. He needs to work on his footwork. I would say he was floored because his footing was bad. But if he can work on these things, he can bounce back and win,” he said. Superior Boxing Promotions organised the bill.
