Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Women national football team the Scorchers on Friday, September 2, 2022 equaled power 1-1 with Botswana in their group C 2022 Hollywood bets COSAFA Women’s Championship at Madibaz stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Malawi was the first to score through Wezzie Mvula with a 6th minute header from Ruth Nyirongo’s cross which originated from Tabitha Chawinga and Asimenye Simwaka brilliant play upon receiving the ball from a throw in.
However Botswana levelled the matters from a throw in through Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse after Scorchers defender Chimwemwe Madise failed to clear the ball at 14th minute. Malawi kept pressing and missed a lot of chances through Asimenye Simwaka, Tabitha Chawinga and Wezzie Mvula.
Scorchers who are the 2021 edition runners up hoped to start the campaign with a win but it wasn’t to be as the youthful Botswana was equally ready for the battle and managed to contain the experienced Malawi.
Tabitha Chawinga, scorchers captain who returned to the team after two years absence was later voted player of the match. The result has however, favoured the defending champions Tanzania who thrashed Comoros Island 3-0 in the early kick off.
Lovemore FAZIL, Scorchers coach, said his charges started the game on a high note but wasted more scoring chances they created hence got punished by Zebras of Botswana. He then vowed to prepare well for their next match against Comoros Island and was upbeat to qualify to the second stage.
