Africa-Press – Malawi. The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has granted licences to Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers to participate in this year’s continental inter-club competitions after fulfilling all requirements.

This follows a review by the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) First Instant Body (FIB) at the weekend in Blantyre.

Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka confirmed the development Wednesday.

“The FIB scrutinised all the documents the clubs submitted. The clubs submitted all the required documents and, as such, they were granted licences,” Zakazaka said.

The development means the two teams will represent the country in the continental inter-club competitions.

Silver will take part in the Caf Champions League as Malawi’s TNM Super League champions whereas Wanderers will take part in the Caf Confederation Cup after winning the Castel Challenge Cup.

Patrick ChimimbaIn an interview Wednesday, Silver Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba confirmed receipt of the licence.

“We are happy that we have been given the licence to participate in the Caf Champions League. We will now continue our preparations for the competition,” Chimimba said.

Silver will return to Caf competitions after six years of absence.

The last time they participated in the Caf Confederation Cup, Silver were knocked out of the competition in the first preliminary round after suffering a 4-3 loss to Gabonese side Ambere Sports Club on post-match penalties after 1-1 stalemate on aggregate.

On the other hand, Wanderers will return to the Caf competition after seven years’ absence, having lost 6-1 on aggregate to AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2018.

Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi said the club was looking forward to participating in the competition.

“This is a positive move for us. We will now focus on the next phase, which is expected to be registration for the various levels of the competition,” he said.

Last week, Caf shifted the kickoff of preliminary rounds to September from August due to the African Nations Championship (Chan) finals, which are scheduled to take place in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya next month.

Following the changes, the first preliminary round first leg matches will be played between September 19 and 21, with the second-leg matches scheduled for September 26 to 28.

The second preliminary round matches will be played between October 17 and 26 whereas the group stages will start from November to February next year.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for March 13 to 22, with the semi-finals scheduled for April 10 to 19.

The final is scheduled for May 8 to 25.

Caf also announced that registration windows for participating teams will commence from August 1 to 31, 2025.
