Africa-Press – Malawi. Lilongwe-based buoyant musician Skeffa Chimoto and his Real Sounds Band on Friday night performed at Club 24/7 in Blantyre, where he also congratulated Malawi National Football Team, alias The Flames, for making it to last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The musician took time out to perform a song for The Flames, with the audience singing along. Skeffa also called upon people in the country to support artists, saying their support in buying their original works and also patronising their shows would build them to become rich.
“We can only be rich and be where you want us to be when you support us by patronising our shows. We don’t have rich artists in the country yet but we are trying to get there,” Skeffa said. The musician, popularly known as the Jamming Machine for his energetic live performances, jumped on stage midnight and took over from Khuza Rampi.
But the unwelcome audience did not disappoint the Blantyre-based musician who went on to offer his songs and in between his set even rewarded some of the fans, who were enjoying his songs with CDs.
The performances of Real Sounds Band members such as Thomas Zimitsani earlier during the show, and later Rampi, did not attract more people to the dance floor but when Skeffa took to the stage, some people who were seated in chairs enjoying drinks took to singing and dancing.
There was also a flash where Skeffa recognised former Flames and Mighty Wanderers skipper Joseph Kamwendo for his exploits in football and putting the country on the map. Kamwendo thanked Skeffa for the recognition and also hailed Flames for making it to Afcon last 16.
“Thank you Skeffa for giving me this platform. I am humbled. Let me also take this opportunity to say thank you Flames for representing us well at Afcon and this is why I am putting on a Flames T-shirt,” he said.
Skeffa performed for close to three hours through to the early hours of Saturday, dishing out several of his songs that people sang along and on the playlist did not skip the latest track ‘Mthunzi wa Chitedze’, ‘Kankha’ and ‘Ulendo’.
He described the show as a success in that, being the rainy season and in the tough month of January, people still patronised the show which was organised by Thoms Park Events.
“To have such an audience this month is worth appreciating,” Skeffa said.
