Africa-Press – Malawi. It is a common belief that when the Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara is presiding over deliberations in the chamber they cease to be a member of a particular party. They are expected to exercise the highest degree of impartiality if the general public was to take the house seriously.
To the contrary, what transpired yesterday in Parliament has demonstrated otherwise in as far as that important attribute is concerned. Last week on Friday, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa stood on a point of order asking the government to clarify on the alleged Aircraft from Tel Aviv to Malawi.
In response, the Speaker Hara asked the Leader of Opposition to furnish the house with evidence by the following sitting (Monday). However, between Friday and Sunday, alot of things happened surrounding what Nankhumwa had raised, the plane came and over 200 youth left.He was vindicated.
When the house convened on Monday, everyone was expectant of the evidence from Nankhumwa, although it was obvious that the government had been caught pants down. From the onset, it was clear that she was hesitant to receive the document.
However, after she had received and now started reading the evidence, everyone could see that she was now in an Malawi Congress Party (MCP) robe, putting on her political glasses.
She completely resigned from her impartial position and went down to her political party membership in an effort to save the face of the MCP government after the expose.
Many believe that, by trying to bury the face of justice in the sand by among others, denying clear and factual evidence presented to her office, the Speaker has undermined and betrayed the core values and principles of her office; fairness and impartiality.
Nonetheless, the Leader of Opposition in just like millions of other Malawians are of the view that government errored in entering the labor export deal with Israel without thorough consultation and for keeping it a secret all along.
Considering the fact that the country in question is at war and that many other countries are withdrawing their labor, leaves alot of questions as to why Malawi government rushed into the equation in the manner it has done.
One is left wondering as to whether the recruits are indeed being deployed to the farms or it is a conscription in disguise. The secrecy and lack of transparency is what is raising questions and that is what the Leader of Opposition was asking government to clarify.
