People Serving Girls at Risk (PSGR) has called for urgent action in dealing with cases of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in the world.

PSGR Executive Director Caleb Ng’ombo made the call in Lilongwe during a meeting PSGR convened for civil society organisations and human rights defenders, who are mapping out strategies for combatting human trafficking cases.

MATEKAIRE—People’s lives are being
destroyed“The reality is that some Malawians are being exploited right here at home,” he said.

On her part, women’s rights advocate Lingalireni Mihowa said there was a need for the government and stakeholders to intensify efforts aimed at enhancing protection mechanisms.

“There is an urgent need to tighten our policies and systems if we are to win the fight against human trafficking,” she said.

Meanwhile, Global Lead for End Sexual Exploitation at Equality Now, Tsitsi Matekaire, said Malawi should match words with action.

“That is why our organisation is working hard to ensure that countries live up to their international commitments. Trafficking is not just about statistics; people’s lives are being destroyed,” Tsitsi said.
