State adds 8 counts to cement case

Africa-Press – Malawi. The State has added eight counts to a case in which Norman Chisale, former bodyguard to former president Peter Mutharika and others, are accused of abusing the former president’s Taxpayers Identification Number (TPIN).

The others include former chief of staff Peter Mukhito, former deputy commissioner general for Malawi Revenue Authority Roza Mbilizi, businessmen Shaffee Chunara and Mohamed Chunara.

They are implicated in a K5.1 billion fraud in the importation of cement case. On Friday, the accused appeared before court where director of public of prosecution (DPP) Steve Kayuni presented 19 charges.

“We were in court for us to get direction on the matter. However, one of the issues we have objected to was a file notice by the defence’s additional lawyer, for the Chunara, Felix Tambulasi. The state feels that there was a conflict of interest for the additional lawyer, who by then was director of legal affairs and company secretary for MRA,” Kayuni said.

Lawyer for the other accused Gilbert Khonyongwa said they have objected to the additional counts the State brought saying they were not necessary. Judge for the revenue division of High Court Chimbizgani Kacheche adjourned the case to November 30 for ruling on the charge sheet objections to the 19 counts
