The State House Tuesday said the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is better placed to shed light on progress of investigations into the alleged involvement of Vice-President Saulos Chilima and suspended State House Chief of Staff Prince Kapondamgaga in the suspected corrupt dealings of United Kingdom-based businessman Zuneth Sattar.
In June this year, President Lazarus Chakwera fired Inspector General of Police George Kainja, withdrew delegated powers from Chilima and suspended Kapondamgaga.
While the bureau arrested and took Kainja to court, the graft-busting body is yet to take any action on Chilima and Kapondamgaga, some four months down the line.
During Tuesday’s briefing, a reporter asked State House spokesperson Anthony Kasunda if Chakwera is satisfied with progress of investigations into the matter.
“What I can say on the ACB investigations and the report that led to the delegated powers of the Vice President being withdrawn or withheld and the Chief of Staff being suspended, the President took a decision at that material time based on what was presented to him in the report. I think that should be very, very understood.
“The President took such a decision based on the report from the ACB. And the President took the contents of the report seriously. And that’s why he took that decision,” Kasunda said.
He then advised the reporter to contact ACB on the progress of the investigations. ACB spokesperson Egritta Ndala was not immediately available for a comment yesterday.
But, some weeks ago, ACB Director General Martha Chizuma described Sattar investigations as ongoing when asked as to what action the bureau had taken against its staff suspected to have profiteered from Sattar’s fat wallet.
The ACB investigations have revealed that 53 public officers and former public officers allegedly received money from Sattar in the eight months between March 2021 and October 2021.
