Africa-Press – Malawi. All Super League of Malawi (Sulom) executive committee aspirants have met requirements including paying nominations fees to be eligible to contest during elections slated for Mangochi on Saturday.
The candidates were given up to Friday to pay their nomination fees. Sulom through auditing firm, Crowe Horwath Malawi, disclosed that all candidates vying for various positions had paid by Friday. One of the firm’s directors Chifundo Makande said all nominated candidates were eligible to contest having met the requirements.
“By close of business on Friday, all candidates had paid their nomination fees. Bear in mind that we also checked if the nominated officials had no criminal record for the previous seven years. We also checked the aspirants if they have been in active football association for a period of five years and are above 24 years,” he said.
Each presidential candidate has paid K200,000 while those vying for positions of general secretary, treasurer and legal adviser were supposed to pay K150,000 each.
Executive committee members contestants have paid K100,000 each. It is now a two-horse race between incumbent Sulom president Tiya Somba Banda, who got four nominations, and Nyasa Big Bullets Vice President Fleetwood Haiya.
The battle for vice presidency is between incumbent Sulom vice president Gilbert Mitawa, who got 13 nominations, against former Mighty Mukuru Wanderers general secretary David Kanyenda, who got two nominations.
Stiff competition has emerged on the battle for post of general secretary where the incumbent Williams Banda will face former Silver Strikers chief executive officer Thokozani Chimbali.
Chimbali got eight nominations against Banda’s seven. Sulom vice General Secretary Flao Mwale will face Donnex Chilonga while Allie Mwachande will be elected treasurer unopposed following the withdrawal of Malinda Chinyama.
Solomon Gomezgani Mchawi will go unopposed as Sulom Legal adviser whereas Daudi Mtanthiko, Charles Mwanyungwa, Ronald Chiwaula, Henry Banda, Chimwemwe Nyirenda, Godfrey Makawano, William Nhlane, Akuzike Kafwamba and Mavuto Missi are competing for executive member posts.
Meanwhile, the elections will split stakeholders as they clash with Flames’ friendly against Lesotho slated for Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on the same.
Somba Banda said they will proceed with elections. “Unfortunately it is constitutional so we can’t shift it,” he said. Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Walter Nyamilandu said both events will proceed.
“These are different events that will run concurrently. Elections are strictly for delegates,” he said. Haiya shared the same views.
“I feel they are two different activities involving two different players. The game should proceed and so should the elections. Fam’s secretariat has enough capacity to handle both events,” he said.
