Africa-Press – Malawi. Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has expressed hope that the newly-introduced awards for players and coaches would ensure stiff competition in the TNM Super League. Sulom has struck a deal with partner Ana A M’mudzi to reward outstanding players and coaches with residential plots at Lunzu in Blantyre District.
The deal will see a 24 metre (m) by 20m plot, worth K550,000, being handed out to the player-of-the-season, best defender, best goalkeeper, best midfielder, top goal scorer and best coach. Sulom president Tiya Somba Banda said the move will encourage and motivate players and coaches to give out their best throughout the season.
“Last year, we gave out a Mazda Demio through our own initiatives. This year, we are back with individual prizes for the best coach, best goalkeeper, best defender, best midfielder, top goal scorer and player-of-the-season awards. We will give out a plot to every top performer in these categories.
“We believe that this initiative will intensify competition among our players and their coaches. This is just one of the efforts we are making to ensure that the league is exciting. We will continue to explore more ways of rewarding top performers so that they continue to give out the best,” Banda said.
The initiative is in collaboration with an organisation called Ana M’mudzi which is also in partnerships with other sponsors. The organisation’s spokesperson Dorothy Kachitsa said they want to empower local communities by, among other things, bringing them athletes that are role models in the country.
“Ours is a grouping which was formed by some Malawians with the aim of empowering local leaders like chiefs and ward councilors. We believe that if these players and coaches live within their communities, they can learn one or two things from them.
“We also believe that the initiative will help in contributing to the development of the country’s football. As an organisation, we are excited to be associated with football,” Kachitsa said.
