Africa-Press – Malawi. Local elite football referees have every reason to smile after Super League of Malawi (Sulom) paid the National Referees Association (NRA) K90 million to cater for the rest of the season, Times Sport has learnt.

This is the second time in a row for Sulom to do so.

NRA General Secretary Chris Kalichero and Sulom Treasurer Ali Mwachande confirmed the development in separate interviews Tuesday.

Mwachande said Sulom was committed to ensuring that they did not owe referees money.

“When we came into office two years ago we vowed to make sure that our referees were happy. We did not want them to have excuses and fail to fulfil their tasks due to non-payment of transport or bonuses by Sulom.

“We are happy to have sorted them out just like last year,” Mwachande said.

On his part, Kalichero hailed Sulom for the gesture adding that it will go a long way motivating the referees.

“This is the second time in Malawi football history that Sulom has paid the bill for our referees. They have challenged us and we have no excuse.

“I would like to promise all the stakeholders that we will strive to do a good job as we continue to rebrand, reform and rebrand our game,” Kalichero said.

Football analyst Roy Abramo M’dechi said transformation of football must start with motivating the referees.

“Sulom must be commended for the gesture. We have had incidents where referees would complain about unpaid bonuses or transport money for them to fulfil their assignments.

“Some were forced to ask for transport from the very same team officials they were officiating games for which compromised their delivery,” M’dechi said.

Currently, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets lead the log table with nine points from three games whereas debutants Ekhaya lie second with the same number of points having played four games.
