Africa-Press – Malawi. The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has asked Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to increase subventions for TNM Super League teams.
This was disclosed when Fam President Fleetwood Haiya had side meetings with member associations before the annual general meeting (AGM) at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach Hotel in Salima District on Saturday.
Currently, Fam provides K10 million annual subvention to each of the 16 clubs, with the sponsors TNM plc meeting the other half.
But Sulom President Gilbert Mittawa said due to the rising cost of living, his body was negotiating with Fam to increase the subvention package.
“Discussions are ongoing. The Fam president is eager to see Super League teams getting more money,” Mittawa said.
At the AGM, Haiya said the proposal by Sulom and other member associations was justifiable due to the rising cost of living.
“The matter is being handled and we will release a statement at an appropriate time,” he said.
The 16 Super League teams are yet to get their annual grant from Fam.
Karonga United General Secretary Ramsey Simwaka welcomed Sulom’s proposal.
“It is a good proposal. If approved, it will help us a lot as prices of commodities have gone up. We are spending a lot of money on fulfilling fixtures,” he said.
In December last year, Fam increased annual subventions to its member associations from K20 million to K30million, representing a 50 percent hike.
