Africa-Press – Malawi. Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga scored a stoppage time equaliser as Inter Milan Women drew 1-1 away at Sassuolo in an Italian Serie A Women match on Sunday.

Milan were on the verge of their first loss of the season after Martina Tomaselli gave Sassuolo the lead in the 61st minute but Chawinga rescued a point for her side with a tap in the 92nd minute.

This is her sixth goal of the campaign for Inter Women in her debut season. The Scorchers striker is in contention for the golden boot award. Relief was the prevalent emotion in Inter Women camp after the draw.

Tabitha admitted that it was a tough match. “I am happy that we did not lose the match. Honestly, it was very difficult. But God was on our side,” she said.

The Malawian is on a season long loan from Chinese giants Wuhan Jiangda. At the time of leaving Wuhan, she was the leading top goal scorer with nine goals.

DD Sunshine Coach Andrew Chikhosi was impressed with Chawinga’s performance in Italy. “It is good that she is performing well in Europe. This is good for her and Malawi because she will help market Malawian players,” he said.

Following the draw, Inter Women have descended to position three on the log table with 17 points from seven matches, one point behind leaders AS Roma Women.

While in China, Chawinga was named player of the season twice and won the golden boot award thrice in five years including in her debut season when she scored 17 goals for Jiangda Sunning.
