Africa-Press – Malawi. United States-based Malawian striker Temwa Chawinga has increased her chances of retaining the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) golden boot award.

Temwa scored her eighth goal of the 2025 campaign in Kansas City Current’s 4-2 victory over Racing Louisville at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.

The goal means the Malawian is tied on eight goals with Zambian Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride.

Temwa and Banda are joint second on the list, and are just one goal behind leading goal scorer Esther Gonzalez of Gotham FC.

“Chawinga’s goal marked her eighth of the 2025 season, tied for the second highest total in the league, and [it] was her fifth consecutive match with a goal. Chawinga has been involved in at least one goal in 16 of her NWSL regular season contests at CPKC Stadium, totalling 21 goal contributions (17 goals, four assists),” the Kansas City Current website reports.

Meanwhile, Milliet (own goal), Michelle Cooper and Bia Zaneratto netted the other goals for Kansas whereas Beckie and Kanu scored for Racing.

The Malawian has been in form since the start of the 2025 regular season.

She has already won two player-of-the-month awards for March and May following outstanding performances.

Temwa said she was excited with her contribution to the team this season.

“I am happy that I am helping the team win matches. I will keep on pushing hard to help the team win trophies,” Temwa said.

Temwa etched her name in the history of NWSL when she won the golden boot award with 20 goals in her debut season.

She became the first female player to achieve that feat.

In addition, she was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) last season.

Currently, Kansas top the log table with 30 points from 10 matches.
