Africa-Press – Malawi. The third edition of the Castel Challenge Cup roared to life in Nsanje District on Saturday, with Umodzi FC edging Nsanje Medicals 1-0 in the tournament’s official launch match.
Played at Nsanje Youth Centre, the game was not just a formality but one that marked the vibrant return of Malawi’s biggest knockout football competition.
Castel Malawi Limited Head of Product Development and Marketing Strategy, Frank Binauli praised the turnout, emphasizing grassroots passion and announcing broader goals of building supporter clubs and deepening fan involvement.
“This is not just about teams anymore. We are investing in fans and communities-in the culture that makes Malawian football special,” he said.
DOSSIFootball Association of Malawi executive committee member Felister Dossi hailed the record K440 million sponsorship which Castel has brought into the game.
Dossi said it is the largest in the nation’s cup history and promises a stronger, more competitive tournament.
Dossi said this year’s competition will align with the national football calendar, culminating in a February 2026 final packed with elite and grassroots talent.
It is the first time the cup has been launched in the Southern Region with Nsanje now joining Rumphi and Dowa as symbolic hosts of football’s growth in remote districts.
Featuring 32 teams, from small-town heroes to Super League giants, Castel Cup remains a stage for dreams, drama and unity through the beautiful game.
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets were the first to clinch the cup in 2023, followed by Mighty Wanderers who lifted it last year.
