The vehicle driver explaining the ordealThugs have disrupted peaceful demonstrations organized by Citizens For Credible Elections (CFCE) in Lilongwe today, assaulting the group’s leader, Silvester Namiwa, and torching two vehicles in the presence of police and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers.
The attackers targeted protesters at Lilongwe Community Ground, leaving Namiwa injured before setting fire to the cars.
Meanwhile, similar protests in Blantyre and Mangochi proceeded without such incidents, with demonstrators successfully submitting petitions to District Commissioners offices.
The CFCE had organized nationwide demonstrations to demand the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi, accusing them of compromising the integrity of the upcoming September 16 elections.
Authorities are yet to comment on the lack of intervention and no arrests have been reported in connection with the violence.
