Thunder Queens’ Thandie Galeta opts for Kukoma Diamonds

Africa-PressMalawi. Malawi National Netball Team attacker Thandie Galeta has requested Thunder Queens to release her to join Kukoma Diamonds ahead of the start of the Rainbow Paints Blantyre and District Netball League season on June 26.

Galeta said she wanted to face new challenge hence her decision to quit Thunders having played for the club for more than 10 years. “It is my choice. I thank Thunders for playing a key role in sharpening my career but it is now time to take my career further,” she said.

Galeta claimed that she had no contract with Thunders despite joining the club 10 years ago. “It is not strange for players to switch clubs, I hope my wish will be granted. After all there is no written agreement between me and Thunder,” she said.

Thunder Queens Coach Christina Mkwanda said Galeta will not be allowed to leave the club. “Anyway, we haven’t been contacted officially by the player and Diamonds. We are not prepared to sell her because we feel she has an important part to play for our team. In fact, every team keeps its top most players,” she said.

Mkwanda also challenged Diamonds that they cannot prize away their asset. “I can’t say how much we value her but it is a lot, they cannot afford to buy her,” she said. Diamonds Chairperson Lumbani Mtonyo said Galeta expressed her interest to join the club.

“We are trying to follow transfer procedures but she indicated that she has no contract with Thunder. We cannot deny a player a chance to join us especially when she can fit in,” she said.
