Tobacco Commission targets 200 million kg tobacco

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Tobacco Commission (TC) has said it is aiming at producing 200 million kilogrammes (kg), “which is equivalent to 200 thousand metric tonnes (mt)”, of tobacco by 2030.

TC Board Chairperson Godfrey Chapola said Malawi is currently producing 175,000mt of tobacco.

He said this in Lilongwe yesterday during the launch of the commission’s five-year strategic plan, which runs from 2025 to 2030.

The strategic plan has been launched under the theme ‘Transforming Tobacco Production and Marketing for a Sustainable Industry’.

Chapola said, if implemented well, the plan would help improve productivity in the tobacco industry.

He identified some of the key drivers of change, including increasing tobacco volumes, adopting technology such as supplementary irrigation and mega farms and meeting market demand.

Chapola also revealed that the commission is actively searching for new buyers to meet demand.

“For the past years, we have seen increased demand on tobacco. So, we would like to increase our production—not only increasing production but ensuring quality leaf to meet our demand,” Chapola said.

Controller of Agricultural Extension and Technical Services in the Ministry of Agriculture Alfred Mwenefumbo, assured the commission of the government’s support in achieving its goals.

So far 58.9 million kg have been sold in the seventh week of the 2025 tobacco market season, enabling the country to generate $143 million in revenue.
