Tonse partners not shaken with MCP Mkandawire endorsing Chakwera as 2025 polls torchbearer

Africa-Press – Malawi. The main Tonse Alliance partners UTM, Peoples Party (PP) says are not moved by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Vice President for North Harry Mkandawire’s declaration that President Lazarus Chakwera will be torchbearer for 2025 general elections.

The partners says Mkandawire remarks are MCP internal matters nothing to do with alliance agreement. UTM Spokesperson Frank Mwenefumbo told The Maravi Post that Mkandawire was speaking on his party stand not Tonse Alliance.

Mwenefumbo observes that the general public is just misquoting his statement thinking that he was speaking for Tonse Alliance. “I hope people are not understanding what Mkandawire was speaking, they are completely misquoting him. Mkandawire was not speaking for Tonse Alliance. He was was speaking for MCP.

If you understand his statement clearly, you will find that he didn’t mention something about Tonse Alliance. So I don’t know where this confusion is coming from. This is internal MCP matter and no need for Tonse Alliance partners to intervene”, says Mwenefumbo.

Mwenefumbo also refused claims that Chakwera told the nation during campaign period that he will rule the country the first term and Chilima will do the second term.

“I don’t know if Chakwera said this. I have no evidence about that. To me, this is a total lie, chakwera didn’t talk about that. If there is someone having a clip or anything where Chakwera was saying this, I urge him to bring it forward to me,” says Mwenefumbo.

PP spokesperson Ackson Kalaile echoed with Mwenefumbo saying Mkandawire was speaking of his party. Kalaile added that being in an alliance does not mean partners can break their respective individual party structures. He adds that if Mkandawire was speaking for the alliance, then this would bring the confusion.

” I agree with Mwenefumbo. Mkandawire was speaking for his party not Alliance. Remember, we are members from different individual parties and being in an alliance doesn’t mean we have no time to talk about our individual parties,” says Kalaile.

MCP spokesperson Maurice Munthari again backs Mkandawire saying he was jspeaking what MCP as a party plans out ahead of the 2025 Presidential elections and has no effect to the Tonse Alliance.

He says, this is a right for every Party in the Alliance and that every Party can do this despite being in an alliance. Munthari added that he is no longer related to the alliance relationship and even the current Chakwera led-government.

Political analyst Wonderful Mkutche opposes the trio remarks saying Mkandawire has broken the alliance. Mkutche observes that the alliance is falling apart hence Mkandawire remarks confirms breaking away. The nation is yet to get real dram in Tonse alliance ahead of 2025 polls.
