Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi National Netball Team pair Towera Vinkhumbo and Joyce Mvula’s efforts to help their teams register first wins of the season were in vain as they lost their respective matches.

Vinkhumbo’s side, Strathclyde Sirens, lost to Severn Stars 67-38 while her compatriot Mvula could not help Leeds Rhinos as they went down to Saracens Mavericks 53- 44.

During season opening games last weekend, Vinkhumbo’s Sirens lost to Team Bath 53-49 while Mvula’s Leeds went down to Stars 57-41. Both Mvula and Vinkhumbo had good games but their teams succumbed to two successive defeats. Malawi Queens shooter Mvula was performing well in the first two quarters, which were tight.

“Both sides started the second quarter at pace, making errors throughout the court. The deficit remained at four for a while before Michelle Magee made a vital interception; Joyce Mvula added goals onto the board, which saw the gap reduce to two (23-21).

“A Rhinos error allowed Mavericks to regain a healthy lead. This saw Mavericks retain their four goal lead entering half time (28-24),” reports netball.therhinos.co.uk. Meanwhile, Siren Coach Lesley MacDonald has called for consistency.

“On reflection from our game last week against Team Bath, our focus this week in training was on finding consistency throughout the quarters and seeing how long could we keep to task, making adjustments in the game when it did not go to plan,” MacDonald said.

Meanwhile, local netball coach Noel Mussa has said both Mvula and Vinkhumbo should not be discouraged with the results. “They just need to keep their heads high and do their best during games and training,” the Kukoma Diamonds mentor said.
