Two Malawians plead for help amid Russia attack on Ukraine

Africa-Press – Malawi. < Two Malawians have arrived in Malawi after being released from a crisis in Russia and Ukraine.

The exact number of Malawians living in Eastern Europe remains unknown but following Thursday’s attack on Ukraine by Russian troops, the two have reached out to the government for help.

Malawi does not have an embassy in Ukraine and uses its operations in Germany to meet its needs in the country. Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo confirmed the development, saying Lilongwe was exploring options.

He, however, said the ministry could not immediately confirm the two individuals including whether they were students or employees. He also linked the language with the government’s approach to the issue.

“So far only two people have come to our embassy office and the embassy is in talks with them. We hope others will come. At the moment we do not know how many Malawians there are, ” said Tembo. Neighboring countries Zambia and Nigeria disclosed prior to the protests to evict hundreds of people from Ukraine.

However, in the wake of the ongoing major air strikes and Ukrainian airstrikes, any evacuation could be a dangerous task and it is not known from Friday morning if the two countries continue with the plans.

Extreme fighting continues across several borders in Ukraine, according to several international media accounts. The onslaught of land, air, and sea began after a televised address in which Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Ukrainian military to lay down its arms.

The president of Ukraine announced Thursday night that 137 people had been killed, and 316 injured since Russia began its offensive by land, sea, and airplane.
