Africa-Press – Malawi. The Chiradzulu Third Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced two FDH Bank Commissionaires to eight months imprisonment with hard each for theft contrary to Section 278 of the Penal Code.

State prosecutor Gladys Billy Majawa told the court that the convicts William Mitiyali, 33, and Alfred Mkwanda, 30, committed the offence on June 14 and June 15 2022 at Chiradzulu FDH Bank in the district.

She said on the particular day, Mitiyali demanded a pin number and other details and managed to transact the money amounting to MK40, O00 against the said amount as alleged before court which was MK340,000 from one of the FDH customer.

State prosecutor Sergeant Majawa further told the court that Mitiyali send the pin to his fellow commissionaire (Alfred Mkwanda) of Goliati FDH bank in Thyolo where transaction was made as shown through the CCTV camera footage.

Appearing before court, the two pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. In mitigation, the two asked for the court’s leniency, saying they are first offenders and bread winners for their families. In her submission, state prosecutor Sergeant Majawa asked the court to pass a stiff penalty, arguing that such cases are on the increase.

Passing sentence,Third Grade Magistrate Patrick Kachingwe concurred with the state’s submission and sentenced the two to 8 months imprisonment with hard labour each as a deterrent to others with similar deeds.

Mitiyali hails from Nansanya Village in Traditional Authority (T.A) Nchiramwera in Thyolo while Alfred Mkwanda is from Mpira Village, T.A Bwananyambi in Mangochi.
