Africa-Press – Malawi. The United Democratic Front (UDF) has distanced itself from a grouping calling itself ‘Friends of Atupele Muluzi’, saying it does not know anything about it.

In a communication signed by the party’s secretary general Kandi Padambo and acting publicity secretary Yusuf Mwawa, the party describes the development as worrisome.

“As a party, we hugely distance ourselves from The “Friends of Atupele Muluzi” grouping as it is blatantly creating a perception of a parallel structure within the ranks and files of our party membership,” reads the communication.

The party says Muluzi is still a bonafide member of the UDF who promotes compliance with the party’s constitution, rules and code of conduct. Meanwhile, the UDF has said it has unified structures under the leadership of Lilian Patel, who it says constitutionally took over from Muluzi.

“It must be made abundantly clear that using the name of party members and structures to advance personal agendas obstructive to the interests and effectiveness of the party is breaching the party constitution and a breach of party discipline,” the communication adds.

The party has also called upon all party leaders, members and supporters to respect the party’s constitution, structures and the leadership at all times to preserve the “legacy of our beloved party” and to avoid disciplinary action which includes expulsion from the party.

Recently, Daniel Chirambo, who is the national coordinator of the movement, said Malawi has for a long time been led by old people who have failed the country, in terms of development.

“As youth from South, Centre, East and North we have agreed that Atupele Muluzi should lead this country come 2025.

“And let me say it here that there is no one here that you would say is from United Democratic Front and we are not coming here as UDF but we are here as Malawians that are willing to make sure that Malawi is really led by young blood,” Chirambo is on record to have said.

According to Chirambo, their movement is not funded by anyone and members of the movement are the ones contributing funds to advance their cause. Muluzi is yet to comment on the matter.
