Uncertainty rocks Wafcon again

The uncertainty of the 2026 TotalEnergies Caf Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals has resurfaced again three weeks before the kick off of the tournament.

The tournament is scheduled to start on March 17 to April 3 in Morocco.

Several media outlets in Africa have reported that the tournament could be postponed.

It is reported that Confederation of African Football (Caf) officials held a meeting last Friday.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka asked for more time to comment on the matter.

The uncertainty first started in February when South African Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Peace Mabe said that the country would take over the hosting rights of the Wafcon finals from Morocco as the North African country was considering withdrawing from hosting the tournament.

However, South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie later clarified the matter that Morocco remained the official host of the tournament.

Despite the uncertainty, the Scorchers are still in camp at Mponela preparing for their maiden appearance at the continental showpiece finals.

Malawi went straight into camp after exiting the Cosafa Women’s Championship which concluded yesterday in Polokwane, South Africa.

During the tournament, the team registered two victories over Lesotho (8- 1) and Angola 1-0 but lost 2-0 to hosts South Africa.

Malawi, Zambia and South Africa used the tournament to prepare for the Wafcon finals.

The Scorchers are in Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria, neighbours Zambia and Egypt. Malawi will open the campaign against Nigeria on March 18 before facing Egypt three days later.

They will wrap up the group stage with a match against Zambia. Two top teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

The Wafcon finals will be used as qualifiers for 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the Fifa Women’s World Cup.
