Unclaimed police kit at airports

Africa-Press – Malawi. There is a consignment of unclaimed 10,000 Malawi Police Service (MPS) badges, 5,000 tactical security vests, 3,000 small and medium-size trousers, 2,000 large-size trousers for male personnel and 1,000 extra-large trousers for male personnel at Kamuzu and Chileka international airports, The Daily Times can reveal.

While confirming that there are unclaimed uniforms at the airports, MPS spokesperson Peter Kalaya was quick to point out that about four people have been arrested in connection with the issue.

“We are on top of things. We have already arrested four people in connection with the matter,” Kalaya said

Kalaya alleged that the four people who have been arrested are suspected to have duped a businesswoman of K4 billion on the pretense that they had won a contract to supply uniforms to MPS.

“The four suspects managed to forge Malawi Police Service contract documents to convince the businesswoman,” he said.

The national police spokesperson said the woman reported the matter to police. Our sources at the two airports have confided in us that they find the whole thing to be “irregular”. We have established that, according to documents, the contract was worth $1,140,000.

We have further gathered that the consignment, which had 265 packages, was flown in from New Delhi, India, under airway bill number DEL 221326743 on flight number ET 0687 and ET 0877 to Lilongwe, Malawi, via Addis Ababa.
