UNDP hands over mini-grid hydro-power stations to Malawi government

Africa-Press – Malawi. Officials from United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on Monday handed over a 220 kilowatt Bondo mini-grid hydro-power stations in Mulanje to the Malawi government. Tapped from Mulanje’s Lichenya River, the three hydro-power stations are servicing 1,150 households in the district.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of the $500 000 project, UNDP Resident Representative, Shigeki Komatsubara said his organisation is committed to developing more mini-grids in fulfilment of the Malawi Renewable Energy Strategy to deploy 50 mini-grids by 2030.

On his part, Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola said the mini grids are a solution to the current power challenges and hope for future generations. Bondo mini-grid is being run by the Mulanje Electricity Generation Agency (MEGA).
