Bachelor of Arts student Alfred Kamwendo from University of Malawi (Unima) in Zomba and form four student at Jacaranda School for Orphans in Blantyre Sandra Chilimani shed tears of joy on Saturday as they came out top in the French storytelling and singing contests during the grand finale held at Mzuzu University.
The long distance that the two travelled from the Southern Region caused them fatigue but it was not enough to keep them away from scooping top positions during the grand finale of the two competitions, which were held in the green city for the first time.
Kamwendo struck the chord in storytelling, shrugging off competition from other finalists from his university, Mzuzu University and Domasi College of Education and won the hearts of the judges to claim top spot. He walked away with K100,000, a gold medal and trophy. “Glory be to God. He is the one, who has made it possible,” he said.
Richard Malenga from Domasi College of Education came second and received K75,000, silver medal and trophy whereas Mzuzu University as hosts only settled for third position, which went to Angela Ngolombe, who received K50,000, bronze medal and trophy In the singing contest, which involved secondary schools, Chilimani maintained her supremacy when she came first, the same position that she got during the regional finals. She beat eight other contestants.
As winner, she received a guitar, K75,000, trophy and a gold medal whereas schoolmate Miracle Gama, who came third during the regional final, improved her position to second and received K60,000, silver medal and trophy, with Moses Brighton from Loyola Jesuit from Kasungu coming third and receiving K40,000 , trophy and bronze medal.
The judges for the singing contest, in a special way recognised one of the contestants for starring with his own composition titled ‘Cholera’, composed due to the cholera situation that the country is experiencing, with the rest of the finalists performing covers.
Coordinator of French activities and Director of French Studies at Jacaranda School for Orphans and Maison De la France, Poya Chapweteka, described the grand finale of the two events as a success.
“The finalists put up great performances and, being contests for French speaking, the contestants did well in showing the beauty of the French language. There is more to come because next up on the radar is the French Schools Drama Festival,” Chapweteka said. The French Schools Drama Festival regional finals will take place this weekend with the national finals following up on March 4 2023.
