Africa-Press – Malawi. Super League of Malawi (Sulom), through auditing firm Crowe Horwath Malawi, Tuesday released a list of nominated candidates ahead of polls slated for February 25 in Mangochi District.
However, the auditing firm did not disclose how many nominations each candidate got during the process, which closed on February 11. Two candidates, incumbent Sulom President Tiya Somba Banda and Nyasa Big Bullets Vice President Fleetwood Haiya, have been nominated for the Sulom presidency.
Former Silver Strikers general secretary Mike Tembo did not get a nomination to contest for the top seat. Auditing Manager for Horwath Malawi, Chifundo Makande, said they did not disclose detailed nominations results in order to level the playing field.
“Mind you, nomination is not a vote. We just released the names to give the candidates a chance to campaign. But we promise free and fair elections,” Makande said.
Asked if there is any legal document that gives powers to his firm to hide the nominations results, Makande said it was in the best interest of the elections.
Super League clubs have until February 18 to submit names of delegates to the elective annual general assembly. Each club will send three representatives.
The aspirants have until February 17 to confirm their candidacy. Somba Banda, who was elected as Sulom president unopposed during the 2019 elections in Salima, is yet to unveil his manifesto. However, he said he felt honoured to be nominated.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for believing that I am the one to drive their agenda and lead them in attaining their specific club aspirations and the league’s aspirations in general.
“The electoral process has now officially started and they should remain focused and not be intimidated in one way or the other,” Somba Banda said.
Haiya unveiled his manifesto on Saturday in Lilongwe focusing on five pillars. When contacted Tuesday, Haiya said he would not relax after getting nominated.
“I know nomination is not a vote, I will go flat out to convince clubs to vote for me. But I am humbled and I will fight until the last drop,” Haiya said. The battle for the vice presidency is between incumbent Gilbert Mitawa and David Kanyenda.
Incumbent Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda and former Silver Strikers Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali have earned nominations for the post. Three people, namely Flao Mwale, Donnex Chilonga and Kanyenda, have been nominated for the post of vice general secretary.
Allie Mwachande and Solomon Gomezgani Mchawi will go unopposed for the posts of treasurer and legal adviser respectively, whereas nine people have been nominated for the position of executive committee members.
The nine are Ronald Chiwaula, Henry Banda, Godfrey Makawano, Chimwemwe Nyirenda, William Nhlane, Mavuto Missi, Charles Manyungwa, Akudzike Kafwamba and Daudi Mtanthiko, who will compete for five places. Despite reports that some women had expressed interest to contest, no female got nominated.
