Africa-Press – Malawi. Stop grumbling that ‘if I had topnotch qualifications, I would have risen high in the organisation; if I had more capital than my competitors, my business would have been the most successful of all; if I had parental support more than all my colleagues, then I would have made the brightest and most successful student in class’. Take the ‘if I had’ primitive thinking out of your mind.
World celebrated computer scientist, entrepreneur and motivational speaker Rapelang Rabana tells us something different. She eloquently argues: “The way we understand how value and success is created in the world today is changing. It is less about having something that nobody else has but increasingly it is about knowing about who you are, what you have and how you are going to use that to your advantage.
You are unique the way you are. You have all the attributes for success the way you are. What deviates you far from reaching your dream is that you concentrate on what you do not have instead of polishing what you have. You are already an unpolished diamond. You have the voice, the eyes, the legs, the hands that could be used to the amazement of the world.
There is one universal truth that must ricochet in our minds – most of the people that have made it have done so from very unfavourable conditions. John Rockfeller was not born an oil giant; he made himself one. Henry Ford was not born from a family of motor vehicle manufacturers; he created the dream from nothing. Bill Gates was a mere illusionist with his Microsoft software ideas until he changed the world and the way we are doing things today. William Kamkwamba was born in darkness but manufactured a windmill that brought light to his home.
Read biographies and autobiographies of distinguished scholars, inventors, entrepreneurs, novelists, scientists, actors, heads of state, sports icons, most of them had a pathetic background such that, on the anticipated scale of success, they would have tipped to the failure side of the pendulum.
Take the challenge to follow the rhythm of your soul regardless of having no idea where it will take you to. Fact of the matter is: You do not know what you can achieve until you try. Move out of the shell of fear. Move out of the psychological cage where you have grounded your dreams on the chains on impossibility.
In the book The Charge: Activating The 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive, Brendon Burchard demystifies the world that impedes us from progressing. He articulates: “Many people live their lives caged in the past or in the expectations of others. They have never really ventured into the unknown or sought to break the boundaries that they or others have set for them. Because they have let other people or the past dictate who they are, their identities are trapped in a tight box of beliefs about what is possible for them.”
Burchard goes on to explain: “Thus, their experiences in life and their everyday thoughts, feelings, and behavours are restricted. They generally feel tethered to where they are, bound by experiences they never got over, rules by the results of yesterday, scared to disappoint their masters – masters that may well exist only in their mind.”
To be successful, and to achieve your dreams, you have to free yourself from the world that you think you are cornered in. Escape from that and create your own world. The world will consider you insane but you have to realise that all greatness arises from what at first is considered insanity. All the discoveries that are making our life wonderful and good now were considered insane when they were being hatched. Read the stories of those that hatched ideas and went on to manufacture aeroplanes, radio, television sets, ships, cars, skyscrapers, computers— all their ideas were considered insane. To make it great, you have to make it deeper into the heart of insanity to make a difference. Dare to be different.
You have greatness within you, you are unique, what you are matters most than what the world expects from you or even wants you to do. You alone are the master of your own fate – success or failure. What you have to understand is that you are success incarnate and your success will only be discovered when you venture into the unknown.
