Africa-Press – Malawi. Australia’s Suncorp Netball Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens are banking on Malawian icon Mwawi Kumwenda’s composure and aerial dominance during a Preliminary Final showdown against Giants Netball at John Cain Arena in Melbourne today.
The two teams will be fighting for the right to take on West Coast Fever in the grand final on July 3. Vixens are hoping to put out a consistent four quarter effort in their preliminary final battle and avoid any extra minutes.
“Without Kiera Austin (health and safety protocols) it will be up to Rahni Samason and stalwart Mwai Kumwenda to steer the ship in attack, with Ruby Barkmeyer stepping up to offer another dynamic option.
“Samason proved that super shots were no problem against the Fever, sinking 10 in our semifinal last week, while Kumwenda will need to maintain her composure and dominance in the air against the likes of Tilly McDonell and April Brandley,” reads part of a preview on Vixens’ website.
Kumwenda described the match as a must-win. “This is a must-win for us to go into the grand final. We need to maintain the good spirit in the team so that we get the result,” she said.
Vixens will be hoping to maintain their form against Giants who they beat twice this season. Kumwenda’s agility when it matters most will also be vital to Vixens’ chances of coming out victorious, according to foxsports.com. au.
“Tilly McDonell is going to have her hands full at the back with Mwai Kumwenda – who shot at 100 percent last week, let’s not forget – so it’s what happens in front of her that matters,” reads part of the online publication’s preview. Giants emerged 65-57 victors during the two sides’ last preliminary final meeting in 2017.
