Africa-Press – Malawi. Former Vice President of Zambia, Nevers Mumba, Wednesday laid a wreath at legendary musician Mtebeti Wambali Mkandawire’s tombstone at Area 18 Cemetery in Lilongwe.
Mumba described Wambali, who died in January 2021, as a music icon who raised Africa’s profile through music, hence taking his time to lay a wreath as well as pay his respect.
“I was a fan of his music, he was no ordinary musician and, so, I thought of paying him respect,” he said.
Apart from laying a wreath, Mumba a prayed before singing praise and worship song and later, joined by Wambali’s manager Vitumbiko Mumba and other members, sang Mtebeti’s song.
The former vice president, who described Wambali as a friend and brother in Christ, Wednesday also attended the launch of Nick Chakwera’s book in Lilongwe.
On his part, Wambali’s manager thanked the former vice president of Zambia for laying a wreath at Wambali’s tombstone. “His laying a wreath at Wambali’s tombstone shows that Mtebeti was a friend to many and that his music was great,” Mumba said.
Born in Congo on July 10 1952, Wambali, who is survived by a wife and daughter, released a number of albums and they include Zani Muwone, Calabrash Breath, Moto and Tizamtamanda.
Born Glyn Mkandawire, Wambali came from Mlowe Village, Traditional Authority Mwamlowe, in Rumphi District. In 2002, Wambali raised the country’s profile on the world stage when he was decorated with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (Wipo) Award for Creativity.
He was nominated for the Kora Award in the Best Artiste from Southern Africa category for his work ‘Zani Muwone’ and, in 2003, he won the South Africa Music Awards (Sama) for Best African Artiste.
