Africa-Press – Malawi. LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The newly established Women Democratic Institute (WDI) is expected to be officially launched on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 in the capital Lilongwe.

WDI, a non-profit and non-partisan organization is committed to invest in advancing and reinforcement of gender transformative and responsive governance and inclusive democracy by supporting women’s participation and leadership in political and public life.

WDI Executive Director Edith Tsilizani told The Maravi Post in a brief interview on Monday evening, that while launching the institute, some of the influential women in Malawi will be awarded also.

Tsilizani disclosed that the institute aims at promoting and defending the women’s rights and supports the women’s participation and leadership in political and public life.

She added that the organisation will advance and strengthen of gender transformative and responsive governance and inclusive democracy by supporting women’s participation and leadership in political and public life to create a more just, equitable and sustainable society.

“We are committed to leveling the playing field by creating and opening opportunities for women and girls to participate and lead in political and public life through protection of women’s rights to participate and lead in public life, abolishing all the barriers to equal participation, economic Empowering women – through trainings and capacity building, advocates for legislative and constitutional reforms to ensure women’s fair access to political spheres – as voters, candidates, elected officials, and civil service members.

“Our theory of change is based on addressing towards achievement of Global Development Agendas with focus on Gender Transformation Approach and Responsiveness in Governance and Human Rights-Based Approaches that have the following outcomes including equal participation of women and men in decision making, equal opportunities in influencing the management of economic, political and social affairs, equal access to benefits”, outlines Tsilizani.

She adds, “On Wednesday, December 13, 2023, from 08:30 am, we are officially launching Women Democratic Institute (WDI) at Golden Peacock Hotel in the capital Lilongwe. In the same day, WDI we are also launching a project called Malawi Women of Influence awards.

“In these awards, some Malawian women of influence will be decorated with awards at for their contributions in the country”.

WDI is involving in the following services including women Economic Empowerment, promoting for Gender Equity and Social Inclusion including access to health, advancing Gender Governance and Democracy, campaign for Women/Gender Environmental and Climate Justice, enhancing Gender Access to Justice and the Rule of law, women and Culture (Leaving no one behind) Approach and women Health and Rights
