Africa-Press – Mali. Salif Keita, first African Golden Ball in 1970 and legend of Malian football, died Saturday in Bamako at the age of 76, announces the Malian Football Federation.

The former Malian international was the first winner of the African Golden Ball in 1970.

The man who revealed himself between 1962 and 1972 in Saint-Etienne in France, began his career at AS Real de Bamako with whom he won the Mali Cup three times. The deceased was also a member of Stade Malien.

Salif Keita, nicknamed the Black Panther, won the French Championship three times with Saint-Etienne (1968, 1969 and 1970) as well as two French Cups (1968 and 1970).

“The black panther is gone, taking a piece of our club with him. Salif Keita, we mourn your disappearance,” greeted Saint-Etienne on his social accounts.

In five seasons with the Greens, Keita scored 140 goals in 185 matches. The Malian legend continued his career at Olympique de Marseille.

Subsequently, he left his bags at Valencia in Spain, then at Sporting Portugal, before leaving for the United States of America.
