Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr. Darsanand Balgobin expressed satisfaction as regards the innovative project being spearheaded by the ABC Group – S.W. Bio Processors, that of producing seaweed-based products.
The Minister and representatives of the Ministry and the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) including its Executive Director, Mr. Theesan Bahorun, conducted a site visit yesterday, at the Oriental Foods Ltd in Cascavelle.
During the site visit, the delegation was apprised of the key steps during the production processes, followed by a presentation on the objectives of project and tasting of products.
In a statement, the Minister stated that the project will undoubtedly contribute to bring forth innovation in the agri-food sector. He underpinned the need for Mauritius to position itself as an innovative country and tap into groundbreaking initiatives such as the one undertaken by the ABC Group.
Minister Balgobin recalled that the project was approved under the Pole of Innovation Grant Scheme offered by the MRIC and will boost the Mauritian economy by developing the seaweed industry on a commercial scale for both the local market and export purposes, and by creating employment opportunities.
On that score, Mr. Darsanand Balgobin encouraged all Small and Medium Enterprises to avail of the MRIC grant schemes to implement their innovative projects and thus contribute to the progress of the country.
As for the Managing Director of the ABC Group, Mr. Vincent Ah–Chuen, he pointed out that the Group, has obtained from the MRIC under the Pole of Innovation Grant Scheme, a grant of Rs.8.9 million, for the production of innovative Seaweed-based products. He further added this private-public partnership will span over a period of three years, and involves the collaboration of the University of Mauritius and the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security.
In line with Government strategy, these innovative products will bring Mauritius to another level for bioscience development, he affirmed.
